My husband liked his short stay at this community. This is a nice place and some of the nurses were on top of things. My only complaint is that there did not seem to be a lot of communication between the day and evening staff. The food was good and they offered daily activities. The staff were nice.

We have 2 family members in Independent Living at The Forum; we visit one to three times weekly. There's both good & bad news -- read more. 5-Stars: The good news: The Forum's independent Living is a really NICE facility. The staff consistently address residents by name. "Good morning, Mr. XXXX." The door men / security staff are very well-trained and courteous; the dining hall staff are attentive and polite. All the public spaces -- the lobby, elevator areas, hallways, dining room, activity rooms -- are beautifully furnished. Live orchids are always in the lobby. The food is high-quality and attractively served; the menu is nicely varied. Breakfast and mid-day meals are buffet-style with wait staff providing drinks and assistance; evening meals are ordered restaurant-style, and wine is available. Residents are offered interesting art classes and have the opportunity to participate in Forum-offered trips to cultural events (i.e. the Opera, etc.) or lunches out on the town. Throughout the year, there are fun on-site celebrations -- authentic TX barbecue during the Rodeo, grilled American favorites and live entertainment outside for the 4th of July, and many more too numerous to mention. In the month of their birthdays, residents are invited to a lovely champagne luncheon. One guest is complimentary, and others may attend for a reasonable fee. Happy Hours are offered twice-weekly. There is a phenomenal effort by all staff to provide a really wonderful holiday event in December. Residents are encouraged to invite friends and/or family, again for a reasonable fee. The Forum is decorated beautifully; the food is absolutely top-notch, and the entire first floor is converted into a lovely dining experience. Live entertainment is provided in each dining space; everyone -- staff, residents, guests & tiny tots -- are dressed in festive attire. It's a really nice event, and residents get to meet each other's children and grandchildren. In all these aspects, the Forum is 5-star senior living. 1-Star: The bad news: We noticed both of our loved one's apartments had very high humidity this summer. We called maintenance repeatedly; they never answer the phone!!! We left voice messages but received no responses. I took time to physically track down a maintenance man; he explained that we had the a/c unit fan set incorrectly; we corrected that in both apartments. In one apartment, we were shocked to find mold growing on the upholstered couch and chairs. We called maintenance and left messages again. Weeks passed before we got a response. The head guy had been on vacation. (And NO ONE ELSE can check voice messages?!?!!?) The Forum wanted permission to spray the furniture with MOLDEX. We didn't want a heavy chemical presence in the apartment; we researched the product. It's NOT recommended for use on upholstery!! We -- ourselves -- successfully used tea tree oil and rubbing alcohol to kill the mold. We still needed to fix the humidity issue in both apartments; we left more messages. We noticed mildew on the wood cabinets and furniture in the other loved one's apartment. We left more messages. I showed the mildew to the marketing person who had assisted us with both move-ins; I asked for a plan of action and a timeline. The response, THREE WEEKS LATER, was an invitation to a phone conference with a mold / mildew expert. The remediation has yet to begin. Meanwhile, our loved ones' allergies and asthma have intensified. There is clearly a huge problem with humidity / mold / mildew at The Forum. Check out the huge wet spot on the ceiling in the corner of the lobby! I don't know how many apartments are affected, but 100% of our family's are.

My mother in law lives in independent living and has for over four years. She called me the other night and said the food served for dinner was so bad she couldn't eat it and went to bed without dinner. This happens all the time. She and the other residents complain over and over again to no avail. If I had another place for her to live I would assist her in moving tomorrow!

Response from The Forum at Memorial Woods
December 22, 2015Thank you taking the time to write a review about The Forum at Memorial Woods. We know that for our residents the dining experience is a very important aspect of life in our community so we endeavor to accommodate their food preferences and tastes. We would like to hear more about your mother in law's experiences. Please contact us so we can arrange an opportunity to speak with the head of our dining services and share your concerns directly.
I toured this community while looking into care options for a loved one, and this place was a big disappointment. The assisted living section was just depressing. Many of the residents were just parked in the hallway outside their rooms, and nobody was talking or even smiling. I would not have felt comfortable placing my loved one here.

The staff at The Forum at Memorial Woods was quite exceptional. They were beyond a 5 on everything at this location. The care received was also exceptional as well as the staff at this facility. I am extremely elated with everything here.

We are very happy with the Forum. We had to make a quick move, so I was glad I had already done some research. There are always a few things you would like done differently. We are very pleased with the staff and the management.

My mother was a resident of the Forum at Memorial Woods for 25 years. She was actually the first resident there. She moved there primarily because of the location but also it appealed to her that there were many levels of care. She moved into the Independent Living in 1990 and lived there until 2013. At that time she moved into the Assisted Living. The director of the facility, Madeleine was amazing. She gave me her cell phone number and took care of any concerns I had. The Assisted Living facility was a lovely place. However, I thought it was a little bit too isolated for my mom. She needed more interaction. That was totally my mistake for not encouraging her to move when she had a little bit more independence. I believe if she had moved there a couple of years earlier she would have been able to get connected easier with the other residents and staff. Her stay at the Assisted Living facility was only for 6 months. Madeleine called a Family meeting and explained to us that my mom needed more care than was offered at the Assisted Living facility. I reluctantly moved her to the 4th Floor of the Memory Care unit. Please note it is always going to be a difficult transition and I HATED leaving Madeline. But she assured me that the Director of the Memory Care would take care of my mom just as well. Her name is Liz and she did not disappoint. Again, she gave me her cell phone and was available to me for any questions or concerns. If you are reading this, you already know that taking care of a loved one and making decisions about care and living arrangements is extremely difficult. However, the ratio in the Memory Care unit is very small and the doors to the rooms are left open (unless the resident prefers them to be closed) At this stage in my mother’s life this was very comforting because she was becoming lonely and afraid. In this unit she had many of the staff members coming and going and staying with her. Please know, I am a little high maintenance, ask many questions, and expect high quality care. My mother was almost completely blind the last years of her life. The director, Liz was extremely kind-hearted, patient, and made sure my mother was always comfortable in her new home. I can honestly say my mom’s stay at The Forum for the entire 25 years was very pleasant. When she could no longer take care of herself, the staff always kept her room clean and her personal hygiene was immaculate. Also, the staff would always encourage my mom to take part in the activities. I would recommend the Forum without hesitation – especially if Madeline and Liz are the Directors.

My parents moved from their patio home to The Forum. The whole process has been smooth and painless. I'm impressed with the facility, the services and the accommodations. It is more expensive, but overall for what is offered I think it is worth it. The atmosphere really sold them in the end - happy people and a positive, warm environment.

Really good facility, one bedroom apartments are some of the best I've seen. Expected it to be on the high side price wise and it was but not over the top. Location great. Only real objection was that I felt my Mom wouldn't get out of the building as it is set up very much to be "an inside" environment location.

This place advertises as a five star facility. However, the cost has gone up and services have been reduced. The food is does not rate a one star rating. Too expensive for what is foodn and services are provided.

We toured this location when we were looking into care options for a loved one. I thought this place looked wonderful! It was clean, well kept, and the staff all seemed very friendly and professional. However it was also one of the more expensive options we saw, and not in the price range we were looking in.

Both of my parents were there in different capacities. I would not recommend this facility. For us, there was no communication between the various departments. If there is an organization plan it does not seem to be followed or known by residents or workers. I think that unless you possess forensic accounting skills, it is impossible to understand the billing. We felt that If you question the charges, their attitude changed from big smiles to big bureaucracy. The valet staff is the best part of this organization. They are kind, professional and always helpful. My father always complained about how bad the food was. He had no option but to pay for the meals but mostly prepared his own food because he just could not stomach the taste. If you are very rich and healthy you might find this a good place to live. We found the administration staff to be a well oiled sales machine.

Response from The Forum at Memorial Woods
April 16, 2014"Thank you for your feedback. Here at The Forum at Memorial Woods, providing the best quality care for our residents is our highest priority, so it is a serious concern for me when I read about a resident or family member who comes away with an experience as negative as the one you described. If you are willing to do so, I would like to speak to you in person or over the phone to address each one of your concerns in detail, and with the attention that it deserves." - Aaron Mulvey, Executive Director
The communication between departments seems to be nonexistent. When my family member moved from one floor to another, no one seemed to know what was going on. The communication with the client (us) also seems to be nonexistent - you have no idea who to contact for what, and no one even knows which direction to point you in. Two days before our initial move-in, the Forum called us and told us that that they had a certain "caliber" of residents, and that our family member was not "up to that caliber" so they could not offer us a space. We were shocked, to say the least, and it took a lot of legwork to iron out the resulting mess. (Never did receive an apology, either.) Once there things are OK, and we do receive calls if there are any falls, changes in medication or health concerns so that part is OK but be prepared for no one person to really be in charge of your loved one.
