La Paula Manor in Bergenfield, NJ

My loved one is well cared for here. There is a lot of staff interaction with the residents, and there is a small number of residents in the community. There are less than 10 residents in the community when I visit, and there are usually 4-5 staff members on duty during the visits as well. The meals are home cooked by a professional chef. There are established meals times for the residents three times a day.

So far we've been absolutely thrilled with the care here! The staff are extraordinarily attentive and cheerful, and really devoted to their jobs. Any staff member you approach, cleaning people all the way to the director, are willing to help with whatever problem or question you might have. I visit all the time and I really haven't seen anyone be anything less than cheerful! It is a smaller community, and I really like all the individual attention he receives.. They really pay attention to everyone as an individual and learn their wants and needs, which helped ease the big transition he made moving across the country. I can't say how happy I am with this place, or how fortunate I feel to have found this place. His health has really rebounded since he arrived here. The one area I'd like to see them improve in is getting a bit more variety and more frequency with their activities, which I've spoke with them about and they are working on it with me.

The Society House in Livingston, NJ

We chose The Society House because I liked that everything was inclusive so we know what we will be paying each month. Also it was the cheapest one we looked at for the type of care that is provided. My dad is in a shared room and it is pretty big. I would definitely recommend to others looking.

Transportation

As a major metropolitan area, New York City has no shortage of options for public transportation. Many residents choose not to own a car, and the city is undoubtedly navigable without one. Options for getting around town include buses, taxis, subways, and in many neighborhoods, walking can allow you to accomplish most daily errands.

Health care

New York offers several health care providers for seniors wanting to be proactive about their health or for seniors seeking treatment for chronic conditions. The area has several highly rated hospitals, including Mount Sinai Hospital, NYU Langone, and the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Senior activities

New York City is considered one of the world’s great cultural hubs for good reason. Within a short walk or subway ride, you can find countless museums, galleries, and theaters, as well as beautiful outdoor parks, and restaurants to fit every taste and budget. For recreation, take a stroll through Central Park or the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. For fun with the whole family, consider a trip to the Brooklyn Zoo! Meanwhile, for those who appreciate the arts, no trip to New York City would be complete without a stop at the Metropolitan Museum of Art — one of the world’s great art museums — or perhaps a show at the equally world-renowned Metropolitan Opera.

What are care homes?

Residential care homes are houses in residential neighborhoods that are equipped, adapted, and staffed to care for a small number of residents, usually between two and 10. Like assisted living communities, staff at care homes typically help residents with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, and medication management. Although residential care homes vary significantly depending on the community, services usually include:

  • Help with personal care
  • Medication management
  • Mobility assistance
  • Nutritious meals
  • Social activities and outings
  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
