I moved my wife into 80th Street in January 2020. Several months later 80th Street went into lockdown following the Department of Health's mandates. While I was unable to see her in person, there was regular weekly communication from the community that was very detailed to keep all of us updated about what was happening. The activities department also scheduled regular facetime sessions and helped my wife with our calls so that I could see her. They also helped arrange window visits so that when weather permitted, I could come to 80th Street to see her. Now that I have been able to see my wife again in person, I am amazed at how much went on behind the scenes to keep the residents and staff safe. What they did was incredible. I am forever grateful for their dedication and commitment to keeping my wife safe when I was unable to see her. I would recommend 80th Street to anyone who needs memory care.... Read more
In Manhattan’s Upper East neighborhood, The 80th Street Residence has offered memory care services to individuals with dementia for over 20 years. Opened in 1999, this community is New York City’s first assisted living community devoted to memory care. The staff recognizes that there are numerous dementia types, so they dedicate their time to understanding them to better personalize care for residents.
Situated by the East River, The 80th Street Residence’s residents can explore riverside parks, dine at a variety of restaurants, grab grocery and daily items from big-box stores, and conveniently access medical care. Residents also engage in the community’s diverse programming, including lifelong learning courses, culinary classes, music therapy, fitness classes, and off-site trips to museums and theaters.
Over time, the community’s design and decor have changed, but the core element of care remains the same. The 80th Street Residence embraces a household model which aims to replicate intimate neighborhoods to minimize overstimulation and offer a sense of home. Eight to ten residents live on each floor with a shared kitchen, dining room, and living room to make it feel truly like a home.
Caregivers are available around the clock and they spend their time offering assistance with activities...

No liquid is given to the residents, presumably so that the aides won't be taking them to b=the bathroom too often. But my husband, who was there for several months, got no water ever, no tea, no coffee Just a tiny bit of fruit juice at his meals. He died of a condition caused by dehydration. This is a complete outrage. Just to save a trip to the bathroom, my husband died. I am furious and sick at heart.

My husband was here for several months. He was never given any water at all, and had only a small bit of fruit juice at each meal--no tea or coffee. He died of possible dehydration. I am furious about this. 'when he entered, mentally he was himself although limited physically. His mental deterioration started when he was there. I did not know then that dehydration can cause brain damage. I complained about the water situation but the aides paid no attention. They didn't want to be bothered taking the residents to the bathroom often. They couldn't have cared less. Do not put your loved one here--it is a disaster.

At meals the residents were given no water at all, ever No tea, no coffee, no water. Only a small bit of fruit juice at meals. My husband died of brain damage, possibly due to dehydration. I will never know, but it is possible. I am furious but helpless. He is gone and I can't change that. Don't put you loved one there--it can risk their health.

The place was terrible for my husband. I left him on [date removed] there, and he was watching TV and talking as usual. I went back on [date removed] and he was totally out of it, having had a stroke, and not one person there knew the difference. No doctor was called, no one helped him. Nine months later I visited him there in the morning and he was sliding back and forth on his chair. I told two aides to watch him carefully because I was afraid he would fall. They assured me that he was safe. Two hours after I got home they called and told me he had fallen but that he was fine. One day after that they called and said he had a cracked rib. Soon after that he died. I warn anyone thinking of using the place to forget it and go somewhere else.

Staff and administration lack empathy and are cold-hearted. Both don't communicate. Not worth the expense.
